Y’all know what I’m talking about, right?
You’re cleaning up the house after Thanksgiving (which, in Canada, for those of you who don’t know, is early) and you start thinking about Christmas. “This year”, you tell yourself, “it will be different!!”.
“This year, I will start planning now and be all set for Christmas by December 15th!”
“Yayyy for me”…
Fast forward to December 15th (or in this case, December 20th) and you are nowhere near ready for the holidays.
Oh well…it’s all going to be fine.
It may not be a Martha Stewart Christmas, but it will be full of love and good food.
Honest.
Just don’t get your knickers in a knot.
It’ll be fine.
My message to you is, pick one thing and do it well and your guests will be impressed.
Maybe you will put out some meat and cheese (which is what I am doing as I type this post out because I have guests arriving in a few hours!) and “wow” them with one thing.
Maybe it will be this snowman cheeseball (all the deets are in this post).
It’s seriously rolled up cheese, rolled again in parmesan and decorated with thyme, peppercorns, cloves and a carrot strip.
Or maybe you can just shape it all into a tree, slather on some pesto, tuck in some rosemary and call it a day. If you top it with a piece of cheese (or in today case, a yellow pepper) cut out with a cookie cutter, you’ll have yourself the prettiest tree-shaped cheese ball ever!!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Crowd-Pleaser: Cheese balls are a universal favorite. With their creamy texture and rich flavors, they pair beautifully with crackers, veggies, and even breadsticks.
- Make-Ahead Friendly: With the holiday rush, recipes you can prepare in advance are a lifesaver. This cheese ball can be made days before your event, allowing you more time for other festive activities.
- Customizable: From the type of cheese to the mix-ins, this cheese ball can be adjusted to your personal tastes, making it versatile for different crowds.
- Festive Appeal: Shaping the cheese ball into a holiday-themed design (like a Christmas tree or ornament) makes it not just a tasty treat but also a decorative centerpiece for your table.
- Low Effort, High Impact: With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a show-stopping dish that looks as impressive as it tastes.
List of Ingredients
- Cream Cheese: The base of any cheese ball is a good block of cream cheese. Its rich, smooth, and mild flavor provides a perfect canvas for the stronger, more complex cheeses and add-ins. Opt for full-fat cream cheese for the creamiest texture, but you can use a lower-fat version if preferred. You can also use vegan cheese (like Bousin vegan cheese)
- Cheddar Cheese: Sharp cheddar adds bold flavor to the cheese ball. You can use mild cheddar if you’re serving kids or those who prefer a subtler taste. A mix of sharp and mild cheddar offers a balanced bite.
- Garlic and Onion Powder: A touch of garlic powder adds depth to the cheese ball without overpowering it. It brings in a subtle, savory flavor that complements the cheeses perfectly.
- Fresh Herbs (Chives, Parsley): Fresh herbs add a pop of green and freshness to balance the richness of the cheese. Chives and parsley are common choices, but you can experiment with other herbs depending on the flavor profile you want.
- Salt and Pepper: Simple but essential, seasoning the cheese ball ensures that all the flavors shine.
Substitutions, Add-Ins, and Flavor Variations
- Different Cheeses: While cheddar is a classic, you can swap it for other flavorful cheeses. Blue cheese, gouda, or goat cheese all bring different flavor profiles. For a smoky twist, smoked gouda or mozzarella are fantastic options.
- Spices: Want a little kick? Add in cayenne pepper or paprika to bring a touch of heat. For a more robust flavor, smoked paprika can provide a unique, smoky edge.
- Herbs: While chives and parsley are common, you can also add thyme, rosemary, or dill for different herbal notes.
- Fruit Add-Ins: For a festive touch, dried cranberries offer a sweet-tart contrast to the savory elements. They also enhance the holiday look with their vibrant color.Besides cranberries, dried apricots, raisins, or figs can bring sweetness and texture. Chopped fresh fruit like apple or pear can also work, though they may shorten the storage life of the cheese ball.
- Nuts (Pecans, Walnuts, or Almonds): Rolled on the outside, toasted nuts add crunch and texture to the creamy cheese ball. They also introduce a nutty, earthy flavor. Pecans are a popular choice for Christmas, but walnuts or almonds work just as well.
- Savory Mix-Ins: For a more savory version, chopped olives, sun-dried tomatoes, or caramelized onions can be mixed into the cheese ball. You can also roll the ball in crispy bacon bits instead of nuts for a decadent touch.
- Holiday-Themed Shapes: Shape your cheese ball into a wreath, tree, or snowman to add a festive vibe. Sprinkle paprika for a red hue or add pomegranate seeds for ‘ornaments.’

How to Make a Christmas Cheese Ball
- Mix the Base: Start by softening the cream cheese. This will make it easier to mix with the other ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic and onion powder, tomato and peppers, salt, pepper, and herbs. Mix until everything is well incorporated.
- Shape the Ball: Form the mixture into a ball shape using plastic wrap to help mold it. You can form it into a tree like the recipe states, or you can make a single large ball (or even shape the mixture into smaller individual balls – they can look like ornaments).
- Roll in Toppings: Once your cheese is shaped, top it with herbs until it’s fully coated.
- Chill: Wrap the cheese ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the cheese to firm up.
- Serve: Unwrap and serve the cheese ball with crackers, breadsticks, or fresh veggies.
Storing, Freezing, and Make-Ahead Instructions
- Storing: Store your cheese ball in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to a week. Make sure it’s well-covered to prevent the cheese from drying out.
- Freezing: You can freeze a cheese ball, making it a fantastic make-ahead option. Shape the cheese ball (without the toppings), wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and place it in a freezer-safe bag. It will last in the freezer for up to a month. To serve, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight.
- Make-Ahead: This cheese ball can be made up to three days in advance and stored in the fridge. For the best texture, add the toppings just before serving to prevent them from becoming soggy.

Appetizer Christmas Tree
Ingredients
- 1 pkg cream cheese (250 g) softened
- 1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes chopped
- 1/4 cup roasted red peppers diced
- 1/4 cup chives chopped
- 1/4 cup parsley chopped
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- Rosemary leaves/sprigs to decorate
- 1 thick slice cheddar (or you can use a yellow pepper) (cut into a star shape)
Instructions
- In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine both cheeses, sun dried tomatoes, peppers, chives, parsley and spices; mix until the ingredients are well combined.
- Place a few pieces of plastic wrap around the edges of a serving platter. Scoop the cream cheese mixture out onto the middle of the platter and completely cover with another piece of wrap.
- Use your hands, mold the cream cheese into a tree shape. Then, carefully pull out the plastic wrap around the bottom of the tree. Remove the plastic wrap that you used to mold the tree and clean up the surface by smoothing it out with a palette knife or butter knife.
- Decorate with the rosemary leaves/sprigs, lightly pressing each into the cream cheese to ensure they stay on.
- Top with the cheese star and place the remaining rosemary (or you can use thyme if you have it), around the bottom of the tree
- Serve with crackers of your choice, or sliced baguette
