Haaaapppyyyy Canada Day, eh?
Actually, for all of you reading this post that aren’t canucks, we actually don’t say “eh” all the time.
Sometimes? Yes.
All the time? No.
But I couldn’t resist…it was a great way to start this post!
On Wednesday, I received a huge bagful of President’s Choice products and was asked to create an outdoor feast for Canada Day weekend. It was pretty easy to have a barbecue bash with all of the goodies I received…a lot easier than trying to figure out what kind of “no-rain” window I had to stoke the bbq and invite friends over!
As I took out all the goodies for my feast, I realized that I truly do have a love for President’s Choice products – and, although this is a sponsored post, I do truly appreciate this Canadian icon and their commitment to creating products that make cooking more fun.
Now, my cooking style is to generally make things from scratch but I also have to be cognizent of my audience and understand that some people need a bit of a head start. So, that being said, I turned on the bbq and grilled up some of their Canadiana burgers (that have Canadian back bacon and cheese curds in them!!) and poutine smokies. In a pinch, both of these grilled up nicely and were a hit with my guests!
My appreciation for PC products goes a bit deeper than just receiving all of these goodies. About 25 year ago, I was a sales manager for a hotel chain in Toronto and part of my market was the corporate market in Toronto. I remember doing a cold call to drum up some business and ended up in the offices where Presidents Choice was created (the President’s Choice concept was developed by a group of food-inspired people who knew back in the mid-80s that Canadians deserved better quality food choices for their hard-earned dollars….and the premise was simple…develop unique or superior products that offered better value to shoppers).
It struck me, way back then, that they had a great idea and in the decades following, I have seen them become a very strong Canadian brand. And although I generally don’t buy pre-packaged foods, I have often picked up their products because they are a great starting point when creating a new dish and some of their products have become part of my recipe repertoire.
A great example of this are their maple flavoured marshmallows that I received in this package. When I was trying to think of something to whip up as an easy Canada Day weekend treat for an apres-bbq sweet, these gave me the best idea. Why not make a bbq favourite – s’mores – and throw a little Canadiana into them by using these marshmallows and crumble maple cookies instead of graham crackers? So easy and pretty brilliant if you ask me!!
Toast them up, coat them in some luxurious melted chocolate…
…sprinkle them with some maple cookie crumbles and call it a day…
Call it a Canada D’eh!!!!
Hope your weekend is awesome!!

- Toast your marshmallows over an open flame, with a kitchen torch or over your gas stove element.
- With a large knife, finely chop the cookies and set aside.
- Place the chocolate in a small bowl and microwave for about 1 minute or until melted; stir and set aside.
- Dip one end of the toasted marshmallow into the chocolate and dip in the crushed cookies.
