  3. Mix the Herbs: Add the chopped sage, and thyme to the skillet.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Combine the bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, 1/2 the nuts (if using), and fresh ordried fruits (if using); pour broth and mix until everything is evenly coated.
  5. Season: Taste and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bake: Transfer the stuffing to a greased baking dish and bake . Remove the foil and bake until golden and crispy on top.

Customizing Your Stuffing

One of the best parts about this traditional Thanksgiving stuffing recipe is its versatility! Here are some ways to tweak it:

Substitutions:

  • Bread: Feel free to use cornbread, whole wheat, or gluten-free bread; just ensure the bread is sturdy (we want the cubes to be soft but stay intact).
  • Broth: Swap chicken broth for vegetable broth for a vegetarian option.
  • Herbs: Mix up the herbs based on what you have on hand—oregano, rosemary, parsley, or marjoram can work well too.

Add-ins:

  • Fruits: Try adding pears for a sweet touch.
  • Vegetables: Incorporate sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or carrots for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Cheese: For a rich twist, add crumbled feta, goat cheese, or shredded cheddar.

Flavor Changes:

  • Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a bit of heat.
  • Savory Depth: Incorporate cooked sausage or bacon for a heartier stuffing.
