How To Store Bacon (and an idea I bet never crossed your mind!!):

When you find yourself with extra bacon (or you’re like me and you buy too much when it’s on sale), you will definielty need to know how to store bacon…here are a few ideas.

  1. Refrigeration: The most common method of storing bacon is in the refrigerator. Simply place the unopened package in the coldest part of your fridge, usually the back. Once opened, transfer any unused portions to an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. Properly refrigerated, bacon can last up to a week.
  2. Freezing: If you’ve bought bacon in bulk or want to extend its shelf life even further, freezing is your best bet. Wrap individual slices or portions tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer bag (see photo below on the roll and freeze method). Properly stored, frozen bacon can last for 6-8 months without sacrificing quality.
  3. Vacuum Sealing: For ultimate freshness and longevity, consider vacuum sealing your bacon. Vacuum sealing removes air from the packaging, preventing freezer burn and preserving the bacon’s flavor and texture. Invest in a vacuum sealer and bags designed for freezing, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for optimal results. And, if you don’t have a vaccuum sealer, you can always use a Ziploc bag with the air removed using a straw
  4. Canning: Canning bacon is another option for long-term storage. Pre-cook the bacon until it’s partially done, then pack it into sterilized canning jars. Process the jars in a pressure canner according to USDA guidelines to ensure safety. Canned bacon can be stored at room temperature for several months.
  5. Rendered Bacon Fat: Don’t let that precious bacon grease go to waste! After frying bacon, strain the fat through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any crispy bits, then transfer it to a clean glass jar. Store the jar in the refrigerator for up to six months or in the freezer for even longer. Use the rendered bacon fat to add flavor to soups, stews, and sautés.
  6. Dehydrating: Dehydrating bacon removes moisture, making it shelf-stable for long periods. Simply slice the bacon thinly and arrange it in a single layer on a dehydrator tray. Dry the bacon at a low temperature until it’s crisp and brittle. Store the dehydrated bacon in an airtight container at room temperature for several weeks.
  7. Cooked and Refrigerated: If you prefer your bacon cooked and ready to eat, simply fry up a batch and store it in the refrigerator. Cooked bacon will keep for several days and can be reheated in the microwave or oven for a quick and easy meal or snack.
